“Cupcake Wars,” a reality-based competition show that pits cupcake bakers from across the country against each other, began airing on Food Network in June 2010. Each week, four contestants participate in three rounds, vying for the $10,000 prize and the chance to showcase their cupcakes at a special event, according to the television channel’s website.
Casey’s Cupcakes, a gourmet cupcake boutique with its original location at The Historic Mission Inn Hotel & Spa in Riverside, Calif., won the grand prize last February with its white chocolate cherry, lavender, white Russian and chill chocolate cupcakes. Casey’s win included the opportunity to provide cupcakes at the 50th anniversary of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Owner Casey Reinhardt opened her first boutique in 2009 while attending Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. After she graduated with a bachelor of arts in psychology, Reinhardt realized she wanted to pursue her passion for cupcake baking and decided to expand her business.
“I’ve been baking since I was three years old with my great-grandma, but majoring in psychology and running a business do not exactly go hand in hand,” Reinhardt said. “I did a lot of research on where I wanted to establish locations and talked to a lot of people in the cupcake industry.”
